One of the most unpleasant things to watch, not only on film but in real life, is torture. It causes nausea, fear, revolt, and for some, pleasure. We are interested in this part of the film: the act of torture was used differently by many authors, some to depict certain historical events, some to provoke the aforementioned reactions. Torture is sometimes an integral part of the story, either to describe the character of a villain and what he is capable of, or to motivate a hero to act. In the last two decades, what we call “torture porn” has become popular within the horror genre. It’s not that it didn’t exist before, it just wasn’t called that. We will take you through the history of cinematography and show what all the directors did and what limits they were willing to go to in order to show it.
