Josif Vissarionovich Stalin watched the play WHITE GUARD 20 times, then under the changed title “Days of the Turbins”.
Mikhail Bulgakov had to rework the drama about besieged Kiev several times at the behest of the censor. December 1918. Kiev was caught between the White Guards and the Red Army, with the announcement of the Nazis and the already vivid dream of a breakthrough to the East. There is never enough invested capital for the Slavs to fight among themselves – an ancient military exercise. There is shooting in the street, brothers, disillusioned officers, the war penetrates the bed. A betrayed woman. The ship the rats are running from. Betrayal and treachery. At the time when Krleža admired Gavril Princip.
The razor of Isaac Babel’s sentence: are the dead Slavs the fertilizer of history without which this continent would be an empty cauldron for European banquets? Hungry poets dream while the pale steel shimmers in the autumn sunset. The Death Cavalry spurs the emaciated crow.
