Orpheus, son of Neagra the Thracian, mythical singer, musician and poet. Apollo gave him a lyre with seven strings. As Orpheus sang, flocks of birds circled above his head. Fish were jumping out of the sea. Rivers stopped their flows. The moan was trembling. The trees came close to him to protect him from the sun. All the animals gathered at his feet. Shortly after her marriage to Orpheus, the beautiful nymph Eurydice was bitten by a poisonous snake. Orpheus could not get over her death and therefore went down to the underworld to bring her back to the living. His lyre defeated the forces of death and the darkness of the world of the dead. The Eumenides wept, Cerberus remained meek, Charon stopped his boat, Ixion’s wheel stopped turning, Sisyphus sat down on a stone, Tantalus forgot his hunger and thirst, and Orpheus’s song broke the strict judgments that had already finished Eurydice’s thread. life began to spin again. The rulers of the underworld allowed Orpheus to lead Eurydice out of Hades, but on the condition that he not look back until they both emerged into the light of day. Eurydice followed the sounds of his lyre, but before leaving the underworld, tormented by doubts and longing, the divine singer turned to see her and at the same moment he lost his beloved wife for the second time, and forever.
