About:

“Dort-yol” is a Turkish word and means (intersection) four roads or four alleys. Once upon a time, in the olden times, that was the name of the quarter of Belgrade below today’s Cara Dušana Street, which, at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, was inhabited mainly by non-Serbs: Turks, Greeks, Jews. Since the beginning of this century, the name Dorćol has spread to all the streets on the Danube slope from Kalemegdan to France and from Vasina to the coast.”

Milan Kostić, Stari Dorćol 1937

At the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, a large number of important, educated people settled in Dorćol: professors, engineers, doctors, artists, writers, statesmen… They built their noble, family houses on Dorćol. Houses with history and memories. During the walk we will stop by some of them. We will talk about the lives, ups and downs, but mostly about the love of their owners and residents.

“I will be your love”, sang Marija Predić looking at her choirmaster Stevan Mokranjec. And she lived a beautiful life filled with love with him.

“Dear and respected Mr. Nikola Pašić, a famous and great Serb, sincerely and from the heart – Đurđin”
– How can the young lady write “sincerely and from the heart”, and she hasn’t even seen me?, Nikola Pašić thought after reading the letter. “That’s how European young ladies are today, free in their behavior, unlike ours who almost don’t wear ferrets.” And then, at the age of 46, he married Đurđina Duković, who was his support and support.

“That’s the one! I was fascinated by the intellectual expression of his face, as well as the unique depth of his gaze, I had the feeling that someone had previously shown me a picture of my “future”, and now I see the original.” The young Klara Šmidlin, the future Mrs. Skerlić, wrote it down.

“Whoever misses love misses life”, is the famous quote of Meša Selimović who, in defense of his love, opposed the then Communist Party and suffered a lot because of it, but he did not want to give up his choice and love.

Welcome to another sentimental and romantic journey into Belgrade’s past. This time we are reviving the love stories of the residents of Dorćol. We will talk about the loves of Nikola Pašić, Mokranjec, Skerlić, Ksenij Atanasijević, Beta and Rista Vukanović and Meša Selimović.
